“Look, Kris!” Jenna said. “Mickey balloons.”

When Kris stopped to let another family pass on the crowded sidewalk, Jenna jumped out of her stroller.

“Hey.” Kris hurried to her side, afraid of getting separated in the crowd. Disneyland was packed with people enjoying the Christmas festivities. “Come on, Jenna. Get back in the stroller.”

“No. Mickey balloons. I want one.”

Kris took Jenna’s hand and tried to get her back into the stroller.

With an adamant shake of her head, Jenna refused.

Erin caught up and parked Christopher, in his stroller, next to Jenna’s. “What’s up?”

Jenna said nothing.

She’s sure learned who to ask for things. She knows Erin will say no. Kris looked down at Jenna’s expectant face. Do you really want to be carrying around a balloon that you know she’ll lose, just so you don’t have to say no to her? Kris glanced at Erin, who arched an eyebrow in question. “I’ve got this,” she said. I hope.

Erin nodded and stepped away, leaving Kris to deal with Jenna.

Okay, deep breath. Repeat after me: The kids can’t have everything they want. It will turn them into spoiled, whiny brats. Fortified by Erin’s repeated lecture, Kris knelt down to Jenna’s level.

Jenna hugged a book to her chest. Her gaze darted between Kris and the coveted balloon.

“No, honey. You can’t have a balloon. I already got you the autograph book you asked for. Besides, we are going to go on some more rides. It will just get in the way.” Kris pulled Jenna’s stroller closer. “Come on, get back in.”

“No. No. No.” Jenna stomped her feet. “I don’t want the dumb book.” She tossed the book to the ground. “I want a Mickey balloon.”

Okay. I guess Erin does have a point. Now what the hell do I do? She looked up at Erin in hope that she would intervene.

Erin met her gaze for just a moment before she pointedly turned away.

Lecture number two: you can’t always be the good guy and make Erin the heavy. Okay, you’re on your own. “No, Jenna. No balloon. Let’s go.”

Jenna burst into tears. “You’re mean. I don’t like you anymore.”

Kris flinched at the childish taunt. This tantrum wasn’t like Jenna at all. Usually, she was pretty well behaved.

A quick glance at her watch confirmed they had been in Disneyland longer than she realized. “I think it’s time we went back to the hotel. Someone needs a nap,” Kris said.

“No!” Jenna screamed. She spun around and ran for her mother. She wrapped her arms around Erin’s legs and sobbed.

Shit. Good job there. Kris picked up the discarded book. She felt like the meanest person on earth.

A small hand coming to rest on her arm drew her attention to Christopher.

She looked down, and her heart melted at the sympathetic look on Christopher’s face. He had stayed in his stroller and wisely remained quiet during the fracas. He patted her arm.

“Thanks, buddy,” Kris said. She gave his leg a quick squeeze. She stood and faced Erin.

Jenna was still wrapped around Erin’s legs.

Way to ruin the day, stupid.
